New Baby Equals Sibling Rivalry (maybe)
You are expecting your second child and you’re so excited! While most children are eager to have a
sibling and are excited while you are pregnant this might change once the baby
arrives. You might find that they
sometimes start to feel like it’s a competition for your attention and start
acting out. There are signs that they
are seeking your attention such as snatching the baby toys, hitting or acting
like a baby. As a parent, it might be
challenging to give both children the amount and the type of attention they
need. However, there are several ways to make your older child feel valued.
The first step is acknowledging their feelings. By talking to the older sibling about what
will happen when the baby comes and explaining you will still love them. Also, get them involved with things like
naming the baby, shopping for baby clothes or choosing a nursery decor.
After the baby gets here try not to change the older sibling
routine too much. By keeping the same
routine it will seem as if nothing has really changed since the new baby
arrived. Have them help you with their
big brother/sister. Make even the smallest task seem important and rewarding
them with praise for being a good big brother/sister. It will make such a difference.

Emotional Support during Pregnancy
Pregnancy for most
women is the most wonderful experience but it can also be a emotional roller-coaster that can get bumpy at times.
You will feel like you’ve entered into an alternate universe where you
have no control over your changing body or emotions. A difficult day at work, home or not being able to fit in your maternity clothes can send you into an emotional
spiral. Stress and anxiety during your pregnancy can also become overwhelming at
times but having a supportive partner can help you though your emotional highs and
lows. Talk to your partner about what
you are feeling and the kind of support you expect, because being “supportive”
can mean different things to different people.
Communication is the key.
Research shows that an unhealthy relationship between partners during
pregnancy is one of the main triggers for emotional distress. Confide in
a partner, close friend or family member. They can help you put things into perspective,
and allow you to vent any anger or frustration you may be feeling. Remember that not recognizing or treating
emotional distress during pregnancy stores up problems for both mother and baby. Talk to your partner, stay connected with your friends, keep a journal, talk to your doctor
and eat right to help you with this very emotional journey into motherhood.
