Morning Sickness and Work

If you are pregnant and experiencing morning sickness (nausea or vomiting) chances are it could affect your work because despite its name, morning sickness can occur at any time of the day.  Most jobs have communal bathrooms, meaning there is a chance someone can come in while you are being sick, so if you don’t want to tell you co-workers you are pregnant be to explain the reason for vomiting.  Depending on the type of job you have you might be able to keep your secret until you are ready to start wearing maternity clothes.  In case of constant and severe vomiting I would suggest you consult your doctor then let your supervisor or human resources department know you are pregnant.

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for morning sickness but find what works for you and keep it close.  Keep a plastic bag and mouthwash in your desk or purse at all times. Stay hydrated by sipping on water (or whatever fluid you can keep down), know the quickest route to the bathroom and be conscious of your triggers. The scent of a co-worker perfume or food can trigger nausea so ask them nicely if they can stop wearing or eating it while you are pregnant.
