New Baby Equals Sibling Rivalry (maybe)

You are expecting your second child and you’re so excited!  While most children are eager to have a sibling and are excited while you are pregnant this might change once the baby arrives.  You might find that they sometimes start to feel like it’s a competition for your attention and start acting out.   There are signs that they are seeking your attention such as snatching the baby toys, hitting or acting like a baby.  As a parent, it might be challenging to give both children the amount and the type of attention they need. However, there are several ways to make your older child feel valued.

The first step is acknowledging their feelings.  By talking to the older sibling about what will happen when the baby comes and explaining you will still love them.  Also, get them involved with things like naming the baby, shopping for baby clothes or choosing a nursery decor

After the baby gets here try not to change the older sibling routine too much.  By keeping the same routine it will seem as if nothing has really changed since the new baby arrived.  Have them help you with their big brother/sister. Make even the smallest task seem important and rewarding them with praise for being a good big brother/sister.  It will make such a difference.
